URSA's Site: Main Page

URSA is:   The United Regional System Administrators.

The United Regional System Administrators was created in December of 1991 as The United Regional SysOps Association.

URSA originally existed to promote the sharing of ideas and technology as related to PCs and Bulletin Boards Systems.  In addition, in the event Phone Companies, Local Government, or the News Media attempted to slander or otherwise regulate what was an established hobby, our organization would serve to unite the more stable and reputable systems in a public forum.  The meetings (although scheduled for a two hour period each Friday) last through the night.

The weekly meetings that took place in the backroom of the Ocean Township Denny’s became a think tank of sorts.   Each of the members that attended nearly every week found themselves learning from and teaching others aspects of the Information Systems industry that they didn’t know.  This group worked as well as it did, due to the specialties that each of the founding members had when we decided to formalize our meetings.

We were able to cover topics from programming and serial communications to security.  There was always a long list of topics to cover, and many visitors to the group with questions for any who wanted to assist.

Over time the group grew to over 35 members.  Unfortunately the Ocean Township Denny’s closed its doors, and the group needed to find other locations that would provide a free meeting place (with food).  It was decided to alternate locations between the Toms River Denny’s and the East Brunswick Denny’s.  The “Southern” meetings in Toms River never really generated any significant attendance, and attendance at the “Northern” East Brunswick meetings never exceeded ten people.

Though not directly associated with FIDOnet, most of the active members were.  Members included the NC and NEC of Net 1:107/400, 1:107/700 and 1:107/300.

With the privatization of the USEnet (what became the Internet), Our Dialup BBSes became less and less used.  The meetings petered out when one of the key members moved to the Denver area, another got married and moved away, and yet another was hospitalized.

The name of the group changed to United Regional System Administrators after the Internet took hold, and most all of the remaining founding core members became Administrators or Management in the IT groups of various large companies.

Although physical meetings have not taken place in a long period of time, URSA’s membership still exists, and new members are welcome!

A meeting schedule is being worked on for Dallas, Texas and Monmouth/Ocean County area of New Jersey.  If you are interested in starting a local chapter, please contact us here.
